A common questions from patients include: what is involved in a counselling session? What does a Counsellor do? To assist, we have developed a blog to answer some of these questions.

The initial counselling session is an opportunity for you and the counsellor to begin to get to know each other. You will be encouraged to share what you’re hopes are for counselling, what your needs in the counselling space might be and what qualities in a counsellor are important to you. There is nothing you cannot bring to your sessions and nothing that you must. Questions about the counselling process and how it might benefit you and your circumstances are encouraged.

During the counselling process , your practitioner seeks to understand the whole person, and how their life circumstances and environments impact on their physical, psychological, emotional and social wellbeing. They seek to understand how an individual has adapted to their circumstances and environments to cope and survive. A counselling consultation is geared towards solution focused intervention and skills development. Life experiences, crises and complex situations can take time to process, develop coping strategies, explore options and implement practical outcomes and change. Therefore, counselling might extend over multiple sessions.

Counselling can provide multicultural support to a diverse range of people, specific to their individual experiences, circumstances, identities and needs. It can support people impacted by mental health, domestic violence, trauma, grief and loss, caring responsibilities and work and or educational stress.

Effective counselling and social work intervention can assist skills development, building resilience and coping skills and supporting action of practical solutions.
